The Republic of Maldives consists of 1196 low lying islands stretched over 820 km north to south and 128 km east to west in the Indian Ocean, to the South West of its closest neighbours, India and Sri Lanka. The islands are grouped into 26 natural atolls which, for purposes of administration, are officially grouped into 20. Most of the islands are quite small and low-lying, with an average elevation of 1.6 m above mean sea-level. Out of the 1196 islands, 199 are inhabited and accommodates the widespread population of almost 300, 000 Maldivians. Another 87 islands have been developed as tourist resorts.
The country has a warm tropical climate with an average daily temperature of 28ºC which rarely varies all year round. This climate is one of the driving factors for the Maldives’ leading industry of Tourism as it attracts tourists from all over the world, looking to experience the warm tropical weather throughout the year.
The Maldives’ distinct national identity is distinguished by a common religion history, and culture and a unique language and script.
